10 percent MyKad plastic cards replaced |
 |
About 10% of the 24 million MyKad, the Malaysian identification cards issued
since 2001 had been replaced after they were found to be faulty. Most cards had
to be replaced due to defective chips or damaged plastic cards. Replacement rate is increasing: 205, 000 MyKads had to be replaced in 2006; 770,000 in 2007, and already 888,000 until October in 2008. Malaysia Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar mentioned the main complaints were defective chips or damaged plastic cards. He added he was not happy with the number of faulty cards recorded. When it was pointed out that the figure had jumped by almost 20 times since 2005, he said: I cannot explain. The only explanation I can give you is because of the rollout. Coverage is more extensive. But I think this needs to be improved. These high field return rates are surprising for an Identity application where the card is not often used. Most government do not publish field return rates for ID cards. However, they can be compared with field return rates for other applications: Field returns amount to 1% for banking cards, that are used several times a week, if not several times a day, and have a limited lifetime (generally 3 years). Malaysian MyKad ID cards are manufactured by local company Iris Technologies.
